I interviewed Monet Combs, a Dona trained Doula and natural parenting educator. Monet loves helping babies come into this world more gently and full of peace and love!
She discussed why she became a doula and shared some amazing nuggets about potty training utilizing Elimination Communication. She also discussed the history of diapers, and the fact that before 1956, 92% of babies in the USA were potty trained by 18 months, and after only 1 generation, the average went up to 3 years old! What happened?
Monet told us that in 1959 disposable diapers were invented, but initially, this didn’t go over very well with Moms. So, Pampers hired a Pediatrician to come up with some studies recommending waiting until your baby shows signs of ‘readiness’ to begin potty training. And just like that, we are where we are today.
Elimination Communication, or “EC” for short, is the practice of observing your baby’s signals and natural timing to teach them to eliminate in a receptacle other than their diaper. Below are some of the benefits:
- Less mess! Cleaning a potty is much less messy than cleaning up a baby.
- More sanitary – when your baby doesn’t sit in feces, she is less likely to contract UTI’s and infections.
- Babies are very easygoing and matter-of-fact about their bodily functions, so instead of training them as a toddler, which will likely involve power struggles, bribes, and tears, elimination communication is a very pleasant, non-coercive experience for both you and your baby!
- It’s cost-effective and good for the environment – think of all the diapers and wipes you won’t need to purchase and dispose of!
